His music isn't always sad. It's just kind of lonely

This guy was all about subtle hooks huh?

He was very good at conjuring mood through tone, his tunes are some of the most evocative I know and often he was primarily just using voice and acoustic guitar

I've spun this 10 times and only now do I feel like I've got a grip on most of it - one at a time I suddenly realise each has worked its way into my head. I will say though that two albums in I haven't found a 5/5 Smith song yet.
Slapping a 4 on it though I do think I like Roman Candle a bit more. My 200th 90s rating!

Needle in the Hay is the only 5/5 one you've missed so far so you aren't doing bad
I prefer this to Roman Candle for the variety and nocturnal-romantic/bar closing n' empty streets vibe of Clementine/Satellite/Alphabet Town/St Ides Heaven etc
This is only a 4 out of 5 and RC a 3.5 so it's not like you were supposed to like these first two best...the really good stuff starts from here on out

Either/Or has five songs better than any of the tunes on the first two albums for me
|
| |
So many 5/5 songs on both this and RC - St Ides is the greatest of the two though.

St Ides is great but Between the Bars and Angeles both top it
|

christian brothers, st ides, the biggest lie are all 5/5
needle in the hay is quite overrated

With the perspective of listening to the entire discog 'Needle in the Hay' feels like a 5 because he didn't really release another song quite as disturbing again until 'Memory Lane'
But I only came round to 'Needle' being a 5 recently

christian brothers, st ides, and alphabet town are some of his best songs. needle in the hay is good but doesn't stand out to me here as much as a few others

Alphabet Town has grown on me the most recently
Christian Brothers I've always liked but overall been a bit non fussed over
St Ides I overplayed back in the day and grew out of a bit

Clementine is my other notable favourite on this, might just be the most depressing Elliott

After knowing he actually killed himself 'Everything Means Nothing to Me', 'Memory Lane', 'A Fond Farewell' and 'King's Crossing' take on an extra grimness
'Pitseleh' is his best 'romantic concerns' gut punch too
|
| |
Everything Means Nothing To Me is an underrated shout, just that repetition off towards the end brings the chills

Memory Lane is probably his most depressing lyrics, but I still think that Everything Means Nothing to Me secretly has a positive message when you take the lyrics in the verses into account along with the refrain.
(both songs are in my top 15 Elliott songs at least)

Angeles is the truest 5/5 Smith song

I give out 5s so rarely but this has Needle, St Ides and Biggest Lie as 4.5s
My only Elliott 5s are on Either/Or and Waltz 2
