listening through this and the shaggs has taught me something: maybe "outsider" music just isn't my thing. deliberately going out of your way to disregard convention is interesting in theory but it really reeks of a pretentious aura to me. and yeah there's such a thing as "too perfect", as in so polished it sucks out the life of the record - owl city isn't basically my most maligned artist for no reason. Fireflies alone earns him that honor because it pisses me off so much.

in other words: i think both extremes suck. being so mechanical you lose heart sucks and going out of your way to disregard convention usually sucks.

fwiw I don't think I could just casually enjoy this album, even though I often dig bizarre train-of-thought experimental stuff (hence no rating). so I feel that.

yeah hearing stuff like this just makes me question the mentality of "music used to be SO MUCH BETTER back then" even more than i already do. music is constantly evolving and changing and i think embracing the future is a valuable trait
