Its probably the production that requires you to listen carefully. Their other albums are pretty well produced.

This is easily the most difficult album by Agalloch. The 'forest' sound of this album was at first quite shocking but the sound is actually quite good when listening with headphones. It requires 100% of concentration though. As background music it doesn't work at all. But even if I give the MUSIC 100%, it doesn't work for me.

The production on Folklore isn't great.

There's nothing wrong with the production on Pale Folklore. It's been said many times, but if you complain about production on a black metal album then you shouldn't listen to black metal.

i disagree

or at least I'd rephrase that to 'if you complain about the recording quality on a black metal album then you shouldn't listen to black metal'. if you make obvious and easily avoidable mistakes then I get annoyed at it. I don't mind listening to black metal that's poorly recorded but if they just make stupid mistakes like the drums being too loud etc. which can be easily fixed by messing with a dial, I don't think that's excusable.

But I don't think Folklore is strictly just "black metal" : P Agalloch has never been tied exactly to only one genre, that's part of why I love 'em so.

Production on Pale Folklore isnt that much different to The Mantle. I dont see why anyone could complain about that.

YES! IT'S AN AGALLOCH QUIET PRODUCTION

I wouldn't say it's the same as pale Folklore.

Into the Painted Grey is a great track.

Took a while for it to click, but it's really good. Psyched to see these guys in a couple of weeks.
