were there seriously people here arguing whether or not old school death metal bands played old school death metal in the late 80s/early 90s?
you realise that "old school" death metal isn't a style, right? it's death metal from the "old school" or that is "old school" or i.e. "is old" and "not modern". It's a meaningless term. Not an actual genre.

I hate the term old school honestly, since most death metal is in an "old school" vein unless it's modern (which I'd define as tech death or stuff like later Behemoth or Hate Eternal)

There's an old school sound it's hard to describe. Certain bands transcend the others. It's hard to compare death and immolation, morbid angel and old opeth.

That's because it's a general term used to describe any band from the 80s and 90s, and thus encapsulates an entire genre's worth of music.
That's why the much smaller group of more identifiable sounds like "tech death" "modern death metal" and "brutal death metal" are easier to use.
"Old school death metal" encapsulates like 90% of the genre because it's the general sound of the genre.
