Understandable, as they're entirely different beasts. This was a bold new sound for them.

Of course the real answer is that both albums are the best (now my sole dual 5s situation as I ruthlessly culled the rest)

I'm gonna start pronouncing this band's name as "Port-uh-sheed"

"the rip" came on shuffle during a little random listening session with my gf last night what a great song that is. always had this weird fantasy of someone performing it by themselves but with all the instruments--hard but maybe not impossible

Need one of those Dr. Seuss-type contraptions

the only part I can’t figure out is getting the cymbal taps and snares on the same beat in the second half, since mf would be using one arm for all the drums—could probably contraption that. Everything else I have pictured

I cannot envisage "Lives Outgrown" will ever equal this for replayability, but admittedly it'll take hmm... 16 years(?!) to ascertain whether this is the correct assumption. Third unravells itself slowly and continues to offer new perspectives even to this day. A quite extraordinary album.

LO is very good of course and has a different sphere of influences / styles, so it depends on your favoured tipple, I imagine. I would never seek to actually compare them directly (except I just did!)

Yeah this is why I could see it being the case too. I also foresee that Lives Outgrown has a lot of replay value, since it's so layered and diverse, but of course that has yet to be proven by having 16 years (!!!!!! whaaaaaaat, Third is so old already I remember buying the CD on release day like it was a couple of years back!!!!) go by.

Yeah, me too!

Hence my own surprise at the length of time that has passed. Logic dictates it must be a long time given my age / what I was doing back then, yet seeing it those defined numerical terms is somewhat shocking

Hehe, agreed, very fair point. Since we're about the same age I can very much relate. Sooooooooo much has happened since 2008 OH my!!!

Hahaha, maybe it was a reviewer who received a copy earlier but who HATED this cute beaut of an album! Very improbable, but still possible.

Were there any negative Danish reviews?

I don't think anyone dares make a negative Portishead review, lest they are willing to give up on their career as a music authority.

It doesn't say review copy, I just remember it was featured prominently next to the cash register at the second hand shop, so at least they knew it was a treasure.

Thank you, although words cannot adequately describe the many emotions I still harbor about that almost supernatural sequence of events.
