It seems like you have the same problem with the Dio era as many people, you judge it because it doesn't sound like earlier Sabbath, not by the content of the album.
As I've always said, if Pink Floyd released a hip-hop album I wouldn't mind 5ing it if it is a good hip-hop album
The "it doesn't sound like them" argument instead of "it doesn't sound good" is pretty banal imo

Fine, it doesn't sound good, it sounds dated and tired, almost like when you hear a Motley Crue song now, you cringe in embarrassment that this was actually considered cool. I always give H&H a chance because I love Neon Nights, but that is it, the rest is templated DIo metal, almost a precursor to hair metal, which is a bad thing. Why would you take the musicians of a great forward thinking band, and confine them to a space as limited as Dio music

are you really comparing Dio to Motley Crue?
If there's an 80's band that sounds similar to him that's Maiden and it seems you enjoy them, I honestly can't see why would anyone see the Dio era as dated, tired or even cringe worthy

nothing wrong with Motley Crue folks

Listen to the music, I related it to crue to prove a point, it is formulaic and sounds dated, Maiden is anything but 3 minute intro chorus bridge chorus, they get adventurous, even at their not so great times, "Fear in the Dark" they have a few songs that go for it, Maiden is prog metal, Dio with Rainbow or Elf is better, but those BS and the "DIO" band is so 80's it hurts. If you like that, great for you, but we are talking about Sabbath, we should hold them to the highest standard that they set for themselves, not a backing band with no ability to stretch out which is what made them what they were to begin with.

Fine, Too fast and Shout are listenable; but should i remind everybody of Girls, girls, girls, or Theatre of Pain, How about Smokin in the boys room.

It is true that the Dio-era was like ultra catchy (in resemblance to "80's hair metal" as you say) but there's way more talent displayed there than in any of those 80's bands. Dio is pretty much a perfect vocalist, that's like a fact, Iommi, while not as prominent on the riffs does better than never in the solos and Geezer finally shines again in a way he hadn't since Master of Reality.
While I do admit the Ozzy era was more "diverse" in its sound, it is also true that Never Say Die and Technical Ecstasy are the most "diverse" Sabbath albums while Master of Reality follows pretty much the same formula all the time (with the exception of Solitude) so I don't think that's really an argument. C'mon man, you 5'd The Ramones debut, you can't really criticize monotony

it is drugs actually

well you got me there, I like the Ramones the same way I like Motorhead, pure energy and attitude, I have always slammed Dio, not sure why, Ozzy did the same thing though, his solo stuff, even the great Blizzard and Madman are questionable sometimes, unfortunately the 80's happened to everybody.
any Ratt fans out there, how about Dokken; Dream Warriors rocks!

"that had the same 3 minute standard boring song formula as all the rest"
Only 1 song on Heaven and Hell is under 4 minutes though...

While I definitely can't see Dio-Sabbath or Dio's band as 80's hair metal, 80's hair metal is still one of my guilty pleasures.
Jamming Europe right nao tbh

by the way letting Ward sing a song does not count as diverse

wham dude no one is comparing the Crue to Sabbath......and if so, you've taken it way to far. and maiden may not be formulaic with the 3 minute standard song structure as you mentioned, but jesus christ they are formulaic for what they do. i've heard about 10 older songs on the new album alone. how many maiden jams have that good ole maiden 'gallop' as well?
| | | Album Rating: 5.0
ya but I was bored by the 3 minute mark, that is why Neon is the best song of the 2 albums
| | | Album Rating: 3.5
tbh, Maiden's probably one of the best examples of an "auto-pilot" band, I love their sound so it doesn't matter to me but it is also true that all of their albums sound pretty much like the same thing over and over.
Their first two albums are the exception but they're aren't THAT different either

Heaven & Hell's t/t is a perfect song wham, it is totally the opposite of what you described, the song has so many tempo changes and musical climaxes that's easily one of Sabbath's best songs ever

Sorry guys, get passionate about the original 6, just having fun, I've said in the past on here that they should of changed their name.
Maiden and Sabbath are my first loves, will always stand up for them, you can be formulaic when you invented the formula.
by the way, no fair looking at my rankings.
