I mean for how BAD this could have been, this is a really solid album given the insane hype and expectations. I still enjoy most of this.

I wouldn't exactly call sput's reaction to this album 'insane hype'.

I mean in the general music world the hype was insane, I wasn't really paying attention to sputnik at that time.

I never thought they would top Aenima but here we are.
Johnny, that's no proof, sushi and mirin I can find at the closest market in Bilbao for 5 euro bucks. Mail me something Japanese expensive and shiny.

Aenima's way better than this imo

It kinda sounds like you're just fishing for gifts here baseline

I still haven't really connected to Aenima for some reason. I don't know why

I didn't for a long time either, and then for whatever reason, it finally clicked with me last year. Now it's my second favorite of theirs behind Lateralus

Interesting. This album didn't really click for me for like a year. And then all of a sudden everything made sense and I loved it. It's probably not a 5, I'm gonna check it out again in a few minutes, but I really enjoy it and Doof said he was gonna do something stupid if this every reaches and average of 3.9
I still hope it will just for that reason lol

Fear Inoculum was a spoiler for Covid anxiety.

Damn, it all makes sense. Relistening to it now, I can say it's more than just enjoyable.

REDUCE 2 minutes on Invisible and Tempest, and ERASE Cutting Voices and Chocolate trip, and you get a 5-star Tool Album.

tbh I don't feel like the songs are dragging, not that much at least, and I'm fine with Culling Voices.
Chocolate Chip Trip is a welcome change of pace too.

Correct. This album has put Covid into perspective and made a valuable learning opportunity for people who aren't blinded by hate.

Oh, I really dig Maynards clean vocals here. He sound so much fuller than on past albums

Did Maynard ever use growls?

Serious question? He did screams, some raspy stuff, whispering. None of this I would consider clean singing. He never used so much clean singing with such a good tone

I contrast clean singing to harsh vocals/growls and not dramatized singing (which would include screaming at times, raspyness or whispers), that's why I asked. But I feel the more laid back aspect of the album lets him be more melodic, so I think I get what you mean.

Ah, gotcha. Idk, so many comments here ironic, it's hard to tell the serious ones from the others sometimes.
Being a singer myself I started to realise how much of the singing I listen to it actually pretty extreme. Clean, relaxed, pretty singing where the chords fully close is quite rare in metal and rock, often the singing is more gritty and a bit dirty. And that has its appeal, that okay, but it's not what I would consider "clean".
