Look, Doof, it is not my fault that I listened to Bach once and now my brain can only get excited by counterpoint and harmony. Shit happens.

Just messin, but you have to admit your two tier Classical/Fahey vs 'everything else ever recorded' system does make your ratings a bit...problematic
|

I admit it can be described as problematic, yeah.

Doof I agree but I’m willing to take it based on its providing “counterpoint” (ha!!!) do the dearth of classical ratings on this website. Sort of like if some dude went around 5ing a ton of African pop music and not much else, can’t really complain on a structural level

Downgrading every 'popular culture' album on the site? - I guess it is fine.
I actually tried the, uh, opener from Alex's favourite classical album the other day. Of course I knew it (you always know the tunes with classical - they're played everywhere)
Not for me. I have a buddy who only listened to hip hop and Jeff Buckley (why Jeff Buckley?) in the early 00s and he just listens to classical like his old man and is very 'what is this noise?' to popular music now.
Even though he was down with the Wu-Tang and I remember that shit. It's def a bit of a stance with him - 'I can't keep up with this youth culture - I step outside and listen to classical and opera, respectable. Job done'. Dude's an academic high flyer so whatever, a published Dr now - 'big brain music'. I wish I could connect but for me listening to classical is like trying to watch an old black and white silent movie for giggles.

Alexander I had thought you said Karma Police was the worst, but I reviewed the last page and you just said it was overrated and the worst out of a few of the other songs.
I can’t admit to thinking any of these songs are lacking, I love every one for individual reasons.

I didn't know the first movement was played everywhere. I knew everyone that listens to classical knows it but I didn't expect it to be Clair de Lune or Four Seasons tier in terms of popularity, interesting, I'm glad it is, everyone should listen to it at least once in their lives.

I'm a professional downgrader of popular culture.

I am very old bear in mind ;)
But yes, I had heard the first movement from the J.S. Bach: Matthäus-Passion before.
It was good and maybe one day I'll sit down and listen to it all but honestly it almost sits outside what I listen to music for myself - more like a historic work of art that happens to be musical.

Subterranean Homesick Alien is underappreciated.
Jonny Greenwood + Jazzy keys + wall of sound production + Tago Mago/ Laughing Stock esque drumming
yum.
Paranoid Android has never impressed me much. Always thought it was more eclectic than it is interesting.

Oh, yeah, you're older than me, that explains it. The only places where I hear classical music is my house and friends' houses, where I live there's only regional music and the new popular thing outside.

You forget that classical music is used in film and tv a lot.
|
| |
Oh yeah, there's also that. I don't remember hearing the first movement in any film I've watched though, other movements, yeah, but not the first one.

I def had a non-classical-listening friend say she recognized the first mvt of matthaus too, must be somewhere
|

It isn't some obscure movement, that's for sure (the whole composition in general isn't) so it makes sense that some people know. There's performances on YouTube that have a few million views, I think. The more people listen to it, the better.
