Actually the more I think of it this probably is the best starting point, since it's a pretty good middle ground between the more electronic stuff and the more rock-y stuff.

It may be a good starting point but what if all the tracks they have listened to are from this album? Then it wouldn't be a good idea to listen to this first. I mean, we know that they have listened to Creep but I guess they have listened to more than that.

In Rainbows seems like the ideal starting place, that's partly due to my assumption that the songs one may have heard are likely Creep and a load of stuff from The Bends/this (with the odd additional one dotted around their discog). It's also accessible and is a nice summation of at least a significant part of their sound.

Agreed with the above assessments. At this point in time In Rainbows seems to be the most universally agreed upon Radiohead album, hasn’t seen some of the backlash that their other stuff occasionally gets.

The debut of many good bands give a poor indication of what comes next. And I would argue Radiohead don't have an "overall sound".
There are still some elements of Pablo in The Bends, and The Bends in OKC.
