And I’ll ever wanted it to feel like
has departed from my life
and the memory of desire
feels foreign in my mind
And the good and bad times
slipping through my eyes
collected on my thigh
I blend the lows and the highs
Until they all become one lie…

Album is full of amazing lyrics like that
Been listening to this and NMG on a loop this week. Whenever the impact of the screams here starts to wear off, juxtaposing them with the brilliant songwriting but subdued intensity of NMG always brings back the chills when Secret History comes back in... they're two of my favorite albums ever.

Honestly NMG and this would both land in my top 10 albums ever, and DDTM really might become a 5 for me. I love how unapologetically sappy that record is. The only song I’m not totally in love with is Where the Lightning Strikes Twice, I know they were really swinging for the fences to try and gain some popularity but that veers way too close to something I feel like I’d hear from like Imagine Dragons or something.
To me this run of records from NMG onward is the best I’ve ever heard in my life. I really hope they solider on because I need more from these guys. Maybe my favorite band of all time.
Conor is easily my favorite lyricist at the moment and that even goes back to their first two records which I’m admittedly not as crazy about. I know I’m very biased but I feel like I’ve aged along with the band. Through what feels like juvenile world ending heartbreak with songs like Rory and Night Channels, to the winding existentialism and longing on Nearer My God, to the honeymoon phase of finding love in DDTM, and finally succumbing to your absolute worst, most nihilistic and apathetic thoughts on the self titled but finding hope in the little things with the ones you love.
The band has had the most insane trajectory I’ve ever seen and I love every second of it.

They’re one of a few bands (Converge, Chelsea Wolfe, Alice In Chains, Deftones… maybe a couple of others…) that I could just talk about for hours, they should be so much more popular but them never having blown up makes these songs feel even more personal to me.

Even in their most dejected and abrasive moments there’s so much beauty to be found. Greyhound is depressing as all hell but I tear up almost every time when it reaches that point during and after the second verse
“ But the wrong was still to come so the whale had run aground
Heaving breaths over time soothed itself like a child
Until it disintegrated, I admit it meant nothing to me”
and that buildup giving way to the gorgeous ambient section, god it’s just so fucking perfect man

Sowing this is certainly my favorite review that I’ve ever read from you man, I still come back and read it from time to time because it damn near mirrors my exact feelings on it.

I agree with everything you said. It takes a special band to create something like this, and the fact that it's been damn near a year and I still haven't gone a week without playing it says a lot. This is an all-timer. Band is, too.
I know I've said this elsewhere itt but I spent a month listening to this album when all that had been released was Greyhound. Imagine not knowing about Hell 99, and having that follow Secret History and slap you upside the head. I was stunned and I will never forget thinking to myself how excited I was for the rest of the site to witness this. I wish I could have seen your reaction to Secret History.

And thank you for the kind words on the review. I spent a long time being psyched as hell for anyone else to hear what I was hearing, and a lot of that excitement got poured into writing this.

Thanks. I was just so genuinely excited for others to listen, and still am. It's my favorite release in decade(s).
Tough decision time, though: this and NMG are both sitting at 3.9 sput avg. Which do you guys think is the band's best album?
I adore both, but can't deny the intensity and urgency of this one. It really does feel like NMG gone completely off the rails.

NMG is sooooo bad, I think they should be indicted for something related to it.

NMG clears this pretty easily imo. This does, however, contain Greyhound and Frozen Heads, two of their best and most emotive tracks to date
