Maynard nearly banished us to the depths.

Never been a big Tool guy, but "7empest" is one of the best things I've heard from them. It gave me inspiration on a boring day off, so now you have to listen to my "Tool style" thing I made that I really want to turn into a song now.

I'm encouraged that some of you are seeing the lack of big, obvious payoffs here as part of a subtlety that is actually rewarding on future listens. It definitely seems that the lack of immediacy here is intentional. Maynard has stated that this one takes patience. So it's not like they're really trying for immediacy and just screwing it up. So I'm going to try and get over my expectations and try and see the product they were aiming for rather than the one I wanted. No guarantee that they've succeeded in their aims for that product, or that I'll like it, or that it's the sort of thing I want from a *Tool* album, but I'll see.
Or in other words... I'M STILL RIGHT HERE, GIVING BLOOD, KEEPING FAITH

i can't emphasis how essential multiple listens are for this, and done in a single sitting. the idea is to listen to the record in its entirety with your complete attention. i'm blown away by how they've managed to pull an album like this off tbh.

Yeah I'm still picking up on stuff even after so many listens. Amazing album and the 13 years was well worth the wait.

all comes with listening to it excessively. but yeah, the dynamic with everything is impressive to say the least

Just fine... 13 years is long time. LP is boring , lack of true will and apocalyptic force of AENIMA. Few god moments and automatic nostalghia love for the band and their sound even if it's awfuly boring...

meh. i dunno. this just sounds like every other Tool album to me. glad y'all love it, though.

Why don't more bands do these otherworldy grooves and rhythms?
For example I'm thinking Opeth would benefit from a week long magickal LSD session.

No cd version. You have to pay for the box set and no vinyl releash yet also. I ll pass on this one only beacuse of the bad marketing. I 've listened to 3 songs from this album and they definatelly do not deserve paying that much .

@Egarran A few reasons. One is that they don't want to be accused of being a Tool clone, since that's Tool's distinctive sound. In Opeth's case, Mikael seems to pretty much only listen to 1970s music these days so it's not really in his influences. Even back when Opeth was metal I don't think he really listened to anything much more modern than Morbid Angel (main riff of Master's Apprentices is straight off a MA record) and Bathory (definitely an influence on the epic songwriting), so I doubt a Tool-like album would appeal to him.
Soen has a Tool-ish vibe about them nonetheless.

@Irony Thanks for the comprehensive answer.
I agree with your analysis, I'm just dreaming and imagining a timeline where Opeth abandoned dad-prog in favor of whatever the hell Tool-prog is going on on this album.
It is a plausible theory that the difference is the amount of psychedelic experiences.
