Born to Beg is really moving imo and that outro is perfection

Just feels pretty listless to me. They didn't do anything interesting with piano, either. It all sounds very basic and the same and on every track they use it.
Sorry for pissing in everyone's flowers, I'm glad that a lot of people still found this to be wonderful. I just finally gave this another shot yesterday hoping it would do me some good, but still the only songs I really enjoy are System, Guilty Party and Carin. Most of the others I vibed with on earlier listens have tanked on me; Destroy You, specifically.

I obviously don't know how many times you've listened but I would suggest trying this some more times, particularly since you're already invested in the band. I enjoyed it more than you seem to initially but it took me a solid 5+ listens before I was really confident that it was actually excellent and I wasn't just projecting my love of The National onto it. Now I've listened to it more than 20 times (almost daily since it came out) and there have been no diminishing returns.

I saw them play Born to Beg a few nights ago and it really changed my perspective on it. Still can't really get into Turtleneck, title track or Walk It Back though.

I think this has surpassed both TWFM and HV for me. Born to Beg and Turtleneck are a noticeable dip in quality, but many of their albums have a rough spot in the middle section for some reason. (Baby We'll be fine - Val Jester and Fireproof - Heavenfaced especially)

'Boxer' is your favourite though right?

I prefer 'Trouble' to 'Boxer' by the smallest margin imaginable, but they're easily my top two

Would I like this if I gave Trouble a 2.5?
