I anticipate many feeling the polished production actually made PUP's sound lose some of its luster.

How it normally works with punk. And the new album doesn’t feel all that punk anyway. Feels like they’re gettin closer and closer to just straight up indie rock.

Yeah, Spotify played DVP right after Morbid Stuff ended, and it confirmed that there’s nothing near as good on the new album. Night and day

Pine Point sounds like it could be on the new album, indicative of where they were headed with their sound. It's definitely still a punk album, it just has a wider array of influences.

I think the lyrics have more bite on Dream, but I dig the imagery of the lyrics on morbid stuff.

I happen to like disjointed. I definitely prefer it to predictable, which feels like the direction they have chosen going forward.

I happen to like disjointed. I definitely prefer it to predictable, which feels like the direction they have chosen going forward.

imo the supposed "predictability" of some songwriting styles is ironically more indicative of inspiration than sudden transitions into dissimilar parts. if a songwriter can introduce a novel idea for a song at the outset, and then consistently provide inventive variations on that idea and/or new ideas that feel seamless and congruent (and meritorious in their own right) without totally diverging from the fundamental fabric that the writer set down with that original idea, then the song is not only cohesive, coherent and engaging for its entire duration, but also probably a testament to the inherent sustainability of that original idea (which is often the mark of truly great song).

my problem with "tour" is that i love the ideas introduced at the beginning of the song as well as the direction and variation as it progresses, but then it cuts abruptly and (this is my main gripe) prematurely to the "why cant we just get along" part which is not only pretty dissimilar to the part that came before it (and thus sorta unnatural, like they just randomly shoved part of one song into the middle of another totally different one), but it also sorta kills the escalating momentum up until that point. like i wanted to see where that first part was goin but nope it was a bait and switch.

this is all super nitpicky tho i actually really like that song. its just not on par with "dvp" which is more consistent with that example of good songwriting i laid out. the intro and first verse are brilliant and it keeps moving thru more parts that resemble the ones that came before them and don't alter the basic nature of the song in a jarring way, but simultaneously add new elements and dimensions. so by the end of the song the identity established in its early sections is still perfectly intact but expanded upon, and you have a piece of music that's much more than just its first 20 seconds without being totally inconsistent and needlessly eclectic.

btw my complaints about "tour" also apply to the hook in "scorpion hill"

There are so many memorable hooks on the new one it’s insane. I have like 5 songs stuck in my head at once
