What, for their discography? If you're counting it from 79 onwards then it might average out to that, but certainly not from 69 to 79.

''Most of Wilson's lyrics are good/decent, some are bad, but his songwriting musically is some of the best in modern prog''
His lyrics are not too much. They leave to the imagination. My favorite example of his work is ''Russia On Ice''... Instead of saying he drinks like hell bottles and bottles of Vodka, he uses Russia. Then he says that all this cold (both hers and the ice in the glass of vodka) burns a hole, making a nice contradiction.
''Even their latest few albums, I don't really understand why they're grouped in with bands like Rush and Yes because they aren't nearly as technical with guitar wanking and soloing as they are, even in their long songs. Dark Side of the Moon and the Wall don't even have any songs over 6 minutes long''
Progressive isn't just soloing and larger than life songs. Pink Floyd are and should be considered as prog. Also, Rush don't have much wanking either. Their solos aren't proportionally long.

It just seems weird that they're the only one considered prog while not having most of the characteristics that every other prog band has. It also just makes it more confusing that they're the best and most successful band of them all too...

Jethro Tull are probably the least typical prog band as the main focus with Tull is always on song writing/lyrics.

Yeah, Jethro Tull don't even think of themselves as prog rockers.
@TalonsOfFire Actually, 70's prog wasn't that much of the prog we know today. Also, you must differentiate between Prog Rock and Prog Metal. The aspects of Prog you think are of the latter. Bands like Floyd, Curved Air, Gentle Giant, KC, Aphrodite's Child, Renaissance, Spirit, Comus and Van Der Graaf Generator, all are progressive rock, without extensive soloing. Prog Metal started forming in the 80's with Thrash bands and then in the 90's came the latest form, with DT.

Shows that I don't jock IAW like everyone else does. Opinions opinions, when will people accept them.
Haha I was only joking bro, I respect your opinion, although if you think this piece of mediocrity is good you're a bigger DT fan than I am.

My best friend and I have had discussions about Peart or Bonham being the best drummer ever and I really don't know whom to chose. He is set for Bonham, as a die hard Led Zeppelin fan. Yes were extremely garrulous, Rush a lot more restrained and Floyd did as much as needed.
However, the main reason they're viewed as progressive is because they incarnated the meaning of the word progression, not because they created the extensive, blabbering, larger than life formula that was used later on (even if they had elements of it in their music, like Yes did). That's what I'm trying to explain.

I can see that. There's certainly more to genres than just the music, even if that's most of it. Floyd were certainly larger than life

The Pineapple Thief and Gazpacho are the least technical out of the prog bands I like, with the former having some of the most beautiful and effective songs without being wank.
Yeah, I agree wi JT. This album is only for the fans. Anyone from the outside who looks into this will probably find this average

My dad always told me that progressive music was defined by time signature changes and dynamic changes.

Gazpacho's latest was incredible. I haven't been into TPT much. You should try out Crippled Black Phoenix. They are excellent and the kind of prog the above play.

The only Pineapple Thief I've heard is Someone Here is Missing, which I loved, but later realized it's very heavily "influenced" by Radiohead and Floyd. But that aside, how would anyone consider them prog? I see that their earlier albums are proggier but someone here is missing is like electronic rock

Talons, you HAVE to listen to Little Man. It's definitely better than Someone Here is Missing and it's one of the most beautiful albums I've ever listened to as a whole.
Older TPT is quite proggy. They've got a 27 minute song and their debut had a couple of long songs too. I'd call it simple prog.
Will do mythodea!

Prog is one of the most interesting genres because it's more of a mindset than a musical style. I mean, you can do prog in an incredible lot of ways, and that's what so awesome. It can be based on technical skills, complex structures, the use of complex musical theory, or simply beautiful music in a certain context can be prog
