I can see that too Jamie. it can probably be taken as both, it's somewhat open to interpretation. the album deals with both aspects, definitely; how the band was affected by the music industry, and how their relationship with Syd was affected.

cmon its so obvious, a crazy diamond focused the suns rays on that guys cigar which was a trick cigar
that exploded and set him on fire and it contained acid which melted away the frame and under the
manhole is the machine world they get welcomed to and a robot called Fred guarding syds sanity who
just gives him another exploding guitar so they are trapped in a time loop
