It was the century of big wars and death because a multitude of reasons, first of all thx to improved medicine etc the nation states had way, way way more people. Secondly we had WAY better means of killing each other.
It had literally nothing of it had to do with the State regulating the market. The most peacful period in recorded history has been.... drumroll the years after 1945. Must be because we got rid of all the states. The most prosperous period of history has been post WW2. I guess we finally got rid of those GOD DAMN STATES.

No one disagrees about this and the entire point of US creating capitalist democracies around the world after WW2 was to promote peace with mutually beneficial trade. So yeah, it was precisely the size of the government's that led to total war/ biggest wars ever.
