pretty obviously that this album's acclaim is propped up by dated high school nostalgia from a generation of listeners who have largely moved on from either it or this site (for the better, in both cases) - which is clearly specific to this album in a way that it isn't to /mu/ canon album X
which is a fair hypothesis if you look at how community discussion and critical esteem for this Brand New (this album in particular) have stagnated on sput post-allegations
interestingly, although the average does fall year-on-year if you move the cutoff date incrementally closer to the present, it never drops below 3.9 (other than this year, which is literally just 20 ratings)
from which ig i'd infer that 1) this is one of those albums huge enough here that community discussion isn't enough to reflect the full picture (i.e. shitton of lurkers in there), and 2) because Brand New is such an emblematic act for sputnik's core demographic of angsty-depressive guitar music enjoyers (and sput BN coverage is one of the few things that we're most notable for off-site) it's naive to assume that there'd be a dryup of a postively-inclined audience signing up and rating this
but now that there can be no new users, we just need to wait another 5 or so years to see how the data shifts lfg
