Yeah, I remember reading the interviews of the band about the s/t and being quite hyped about a "return to their roots". And, well, besides some pale Rush imitations, I don't hear any return to the band's roots. To me it doesn't even sound like "DT playing typical DT", like the band said it was going to be, because sometimes listening to the s/t I just feel like I'm listening to a completely different band.
DT have always tried to make some catchy melodies here and there, and it never really worked without falling into the cheesy territory, unless with songs like Surrounded and The Best of Times, for example, which are catchy as fuck. To me, the main problem of the s/t is that DT are trying to be somewhat more accessible, with catchy melodies and hooker riffs, but this just doesn't work for me. Trying to be more accessible just drives them directly into unoriginality and cheesiness

It was characteristically DT... sadly. It works for most people though!
I mean, I didn't hear any similarity with the s/t and typical DT, but as one of the reviews for it said, it was a formulaic release for DT standards. I hope they shake it their 'traditional' DT creativeness and now focus their efforts on doing something different. I don't know and I'm not even sure if I care anymore. If their next album sucks, I may just give up with them and focus my endeavor on better bands

Yeah I think they could end their career right now and I wouldn't care. DT, despite having some lower albums, have never actually done any bad albums, and I would like that they keep it that way, even if the cost is that they stop right now.

The self titled is arguably bad. I don't think they'd stop right now, they have to at least last the 5 years that Portnoy wanted them to have! That way, they can attempt to rub it in their face at what they've achieved in the time he wanted to have a break.
And he'll just laugh in their faces.

Yeah, I wonder what it would've sounded like if they had taken the hiatus Portnoy proposed. I mean, they'd probably be releasing an album this year or next year, and they would have been refreshed. I guess it could probably have been one of their best albums, I wonder

It would have been the best thing ever and have an epic that's a million times better than Illumination Theory

I wish DT had more moments like the softer part in A Nightmare to Remember.

Oh well, I kind of expected something like that to happen anyway. Wasn't like Portnoy would ever escape the DT fanbase
