I keep mentioning Tool lol but that's the only flat out prog metal band that comes to mind. Any other great ones anyone recommends?

Opeth

Dream Theater (90s stuff)

Psychotic Waltz

Queensryche (Operation: Mindcrime)

Riverside (not really prog metal but you'll love them)

Death (progressive death metal pioneers)

Opeth. I couldn't describe them as anything but "prog metal" although people like to say "progressive death metal" but that doesn't really fit, imo

Heard good things about Opeth. And heard a little of Riverside and it wasn't bad. I'll give them a listen eventually thanks!

@Mong123: You should DEFINITELY check out Opeth. Since you're not a huge fan of the harsher forms of metal, you should probably start with Damnation.

Yea I rarely like anything with extended screaming or anything like that. I don't mind a little

screaming here and there. I'll still give them a listen though what have I got to lose?

Blackwater Park or Ghost Reveries would be the best place to start, since theres plenty of mellow
sections

If you dont mind a little harshness then^

The pretty parts more than make up for it.

I think Watershed is pretty underrated too. At least, it's about as underrated as an Opeth album can be. The keyboard solo on Burden is pure secks.

Watershed is underrated [2] but Burden is one of my least favs there, mostly because it feels to drag forever

Yeah, but that ending is one of the weirdest and most awesome things ever committed to a record. :D Mad genius is the only description.
