After some research I can say that 'the boomer ellipsis' is indeed a thing.

Album is still very underwhelming. Recently revisited it, and even in comparison to 2006' ''10,000 Days'' album, this album sounds like garbage sonically. No dynamics in production, all the vocals sound recorded and mixed the exact same. No little idiosyncrasies in these songs that used to be there. Very flat, boring songwriting.
It's still disappointing. ''10,000 Days'' wasn't amazing but it seems like a masterclass in production and personality compared to this shite.
And that's my hot take about this album. And yes, I do believe I'm 100% right.

lets be real for a moment this album was destined to fail anyway, never had a true chance. ppl were alrdy borderline sick of it waaaaaaay before it finally dropped.
most bands still could only dream of writing smth like this. move on

everyone on this site thinks that, thats why u cant take anything srs. especially ratings. but i certainly enjoy the banter

weird take but I think I was really suspicious of this when I saw the album artwork. Such a weird bias but the artwork looks so uncool, especially the text.

The artwork without the text looks much better. Like the one sputnik uses.

I think this is pretty good, but definitely not worth the wait. Then again, similar to Half-Life 3, it was probably never gonna live up to expectations anyway. If I were the band, I would have scrapped the material and started again from scratch. But again, what we got was still solid enough

I really wanted them to modernize. Some of the promotional material had me thinking they were going in a digital direction, and they’ve done some crazy production tricks in the past, especially on Aenima. But nah, it’s just long ass jams with little sonic diversity. An album of Chocolate Chip Trip type songs could’ve been cool. They just lost their edge man, they aren’t forward thinking anymore.

I got into tool relatively recently so I had really just finished consuming 10,000 days when this got announced. It doesn’t live up to a year of waiting, let alone 13.

well tool fans ate it like thanksgiving dinner and said all criticism of it "aged like milk" so it doesn't really matter anyway

“most bands still could only dream of writing smth like this. move on”
Bands should be proud that they didn’t write this

I feel like having my favorite Tool albums be Undertow and Ænima helped prepare my expectations for Fear Inoculum. Angry Tool is my fav Tool, and after Lateralus went "*bong rip* what if we're like one big consciousness maaaaaan?", the less aggressive they got. There were still some angst, especially on 10,000 Days, but the roughness of their sound was more subdued. I knew this new album was gonna sound more relaxed, so as a result I really enjoyed this without feeling let down.
