Excellent. You do you, of course - I don't mean to shame you for your taste. But as you can see from my rating, I really don't like this album, and I never have. My formula for Floyd is more Gilmour = better; more Waters allowed to run wild = worse. (And no Wright = right out.)

I love Gilmour and yeah I know a lot of people really tire of Waters but I love the songs he writes. I get that he was pushing the band out of creative and performance duties and I'm not defending that, I just love the music.

Why do you say Gilmour is a ninny, norm?
|
| |
Album Rating: 2.0
I don't know if that's accurate, norm. My impression was always that Waters was a total narcissist, but Gilmour was a bit more laid back.
But personalities aside, my formula was more about the music than it was about anything else. I acknowledge that after Barrett left, Waters was the dominant creative force, but I think that the more Gilmour tempered that, the better the music was. And the more Waters was totally in charge, the worse it was. And Final Cut is almost all Waters.

I enjoy most all balances of the gilmour/waters influence scale in different ways tbh

As for Fripp, I love him, but I think he must be a control freak because how many different versions of the band did he burn through.

"without waters, gilmours' music simply doesnt have any edge to it. it's nice, but boring. "
Agreed hard

I wouldn't say out-and-out boring, but yeah, I agree with your basic statement here.
Pink Floyd was at there best when both of these guys were both there, Waters as the driving force and Gilmour as the tempering force who curved some of Waters' excesses.
BUT I also preferred the version of Floyd without Waters (Momentary Lapse of Reason, Division Bell and even Endless River) to the version of Floyd where Waters was just allowed to run hog wild (The Final Cut).

I honestly found mlor and division bell super boring
But I will say of my floyd 5s, I definitely prefer dark side, wywh and animals to this. They have a more pure musical prowess that makes them much easier and more fun to listen to, which im sure gilmour was at least partially responsible for

This is probably one of the most singularly odd albums made by a major artist during their "prime". It isn't an easy listen, especially if you're not already familiar with it and a lot of the album is so slight and mixed so low that it can get drown out by everyday background noises wherever you happen to be while listening.
That being said, this is the Pink Floyd album I find myself coming back to the most (although it is essentially a Floyd album in name only). I would rate it a minor work of genius and a rewarding album once you tease out the beauty hidden within the delicate production. It has no real "hits" to speak of, although 'Not Now John' has a nice propulsion to it (which makes the song stand out as an oddball with the rest of the subdued songs on the album). Combine that with coming right after the monumental smash hit The Wall, the album was basically set up as a commercial letdown from the get-go. But if you can look past the lack of pop leanings and take the album on its own merits there is plenty of worthwhile music and some quite poignant lyrics from Waters to enjoy.
