I mean in the grand scheme of things I could not give less of a shit about the avg for this record, I enjoy it a lot, I’m very excited to see these songs live.
But on the other hand it would’ve been kinda cool to have this be their highest rated record like 25 years into their career

I mean, as well as they pull a lot of these experiments off, looking at the full picture makes it feel like they kinda just tried a bunch of random shit and it doesn't exactly sound cohesive as an album. And again, the vocals are so rough. And the production is inconsistent in ways I'm not a fan of at all.

the fantano effect is def a thing on rym (as much as everyone there tries to argue its not)
wouldn't really say it exists here tho... especially in this case lol like a new avenged sevenfold album is appointment listening for the large majority of this userbase, nobody needed fantano shitting on it to persuade them to check this

It's totally fair to disagree. I don't even think it's bad, just all over the place.

This is not the Avenged Sevenfold I have come to expect from their last two releases. That's a damn good thing! Their sound was overdone and stale. Good on them for trying a different direction and being brave enough to put up with the flak haters are going to throw at them.
It's not the best album they've ever made and that's OK. They're taking a step in the right direction trying to explore their sound and find something new that works for them. I don't think they've honed it in here, even if the step up in complexity and layering of sounds is eons past what they've done in the past. I hope they've stumbled upon a sound they can carry forward as a cohesive album. This sounds more like a compilation of demos than their eighth full-length release unfortunately. There's a lot of really good technique and composition going on in these songs.

I really disagree with that first paragraph. Whatever you think of this record, fine. It might seem too all over the place and the band overreaching their grasp, but The Stage is undeniably a well made record. I can’t think of a single dud, even the even the most extreme metal elitist would have to admit it’s decent prog even tho they hate the band
They pushed the boundaries of mainstream rock with that album, and went even further with this.

This sounds pretty solid to me as a package. It's weird sure but I wouldn't even call it incoherent

I guess there has to be a certain openness to and acceptance of hearing a band jump the shark when you listen to prog stuff. Might be why I don't get into it as much as I used to.

I actually enjoyed Fantano's review too even though I entirely disagree with him. The thing is, I actually understand every point that he made about the album. I think this is just not his cup of tea in the same way he can't really stand Devin Townsend yet Devy is one of my all time favorites. Some musicians just create a sound that's enjoyable to some and god awful to others.
