Oh my god that first break around a minute in God He Sees In Mirrors. I don't even know what the fuck that is but holy shit my jaw literally dropped.

This is a good album but its near the bottom of their discography imo. Haven't heard contradictions collapse but I think I enjoy just about every other release more than this

Cool to see onionbro in the Shug threads m/

The magic for this one wore off for me a bit, but damn does it kick ass. Definitely enjoy it more than TVSOR and Koloss but doesn't compare to their older material.

First jam impressed me greatly. Some damn fine grooves and infectious riffs here on show, cannot decide if this is a 4 or 4.5 yet.

Idk if doesn't compare to their older material is a good way to put it Jay. That's a bit of a stretch. They deff have quite a few albums stronger than this but this stands on it's own pretty well. It's a easy 4. Damn good album

i mean sure after listening to this everyday all week constantly its probably not a 4.5 anymore. but every album will lose quality overplaying it. I bet if i took a break from this for a bit it would slap again. still better than the last two albums for me. i would give it a 4.2

I prefer

Nothing

DEI

Koloss

Chaosphere

obZen

Contradictions Collapse (recently fell in love with that one)

Catch 33

over the new one, but it is better than

The Violent Sleep Of Reason

Perhaps I am ready to rank them after all. I always rate based on enjoyment (is an album able to suck me in, am I able to connect with it?), not on anything else (technicality, inventiveness, importance, influence, etc.).

I can put the album similarity a bit more concisely now. Immutable is quite adjacent to TVSoR, but brings back a lot of elements from C33, obZen and Nothing. It starts like C33, turns more into TVSoR+obZen, and has the pacing and consistency of Nothing. It doesn't get as dark as anything from C33 and onwards, which also makes it appear more like Nothing, and it's quite notable because most of everything they've done since Chaosphere has been dark.

The innovative things Meshuggah has done here are incredible. Subtle cathartic moments are a hallmark of this album. There was clearly a large focus in trying weed out "filler" WITHOUT reducing the effectiveness of buildups. It strikes a nearly perfect balance between the energy of their newer style with the old. Where things can be very long-winded in albums like obZen, and then where things can feel more short-winded in TVSoR, Immutable finds a middle ground.
