Mariner had very sparse dynamics. Vocals weren't a problem for me at all. In fact, if it weren't for the vocals, I'd probably have it down as CoL's worst release.

I understand how one could love Mariner without even being a big CoL fan, although that helps illustrate the point, it really is an entirely separate piece of work. I appreciate it for what it is, but if I'm craving the crushing monolithic sound these guys are so capable of creating, then of course it isn't going to be my go-to album. I'm also rather fond of the softer atmospheric passages that seem more impact-full due to the stark contrasts they produce, if one side of the coin is diluted, the shifts in sound don't appear as effective.
I agree with you Pika re Julie's vox, they actually carry that album to an extent and are the main reason for returning (it's a more vocally focused album after all). Instrumentally Mariner is 'their' weakest.

I don't always, it's just everyone seems to be doing it. Hard to avoid. I should probably refrain in future, ha.

Because sonically it's still Cult of Luna at heart. If they recorded it without the female vox, it would be hands down their worst effort.

True, but I guess it would be unfair to remove a major component of the album to make this point - Julie's vox do indeed exist and of course it wouldn't be the same without them, the instrumentals are part of a bigger picture and cannot be separated in such a way.

This is the argument I was going to make, but you made it for me.

Realizing I wouldn't like this album as much if it wasn't for the keys. They damn tasty here.

Average still at 4.3? That's mighty impressive these days, last year didn't even have one album rated that high

Last release with a 4.3 average and a decent no. of votes is/was Vektor/David Bowie in 2016, hanging on by a thread mind... down to 4.26 now.
