Tbh I had this at a 3.5 on the first listen and I stopped it at 7empest as I was drained/had other shit to do then went to discuss with some friends and I said "eh it's good but I had no expectations anyway to be mindblowing plus maybe it's too mellow they should have had a fucking punch in the face moment" then I went back to my bed pulled 7empest on my sweet DAC and holy shit that fucking riff had me like duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuude



I can't wait to get rid of my throat infection and get massively stoned listening to this shit

love the album. my only minor gripe is that it all sounds kinda samey. its like the reviewer said, this feels like it could fit into their catalog from 10 years ago. not a terrible thing, but after 13 years, I was kinda hoping Tool was gonna do something unique. perhaps that is a bit of the built up hype speaking. overall, i'd rather have this than them dropping a total turd.

"I was kinda hoping Tool was gonna do something unique" It is...and pretty much as any other Tool release. If you think its samey (which I get) its only because you haven't listened close enough. I thought that and even when I think "oh this part again" its not...there's always interesting details and variations (insane cool drumming, electronic additions, vocal layers, or slight changes in the riff itself or its tempo) to keep you going and going for further listens.

Sure, they change up the riffs all the time, but the last 3 albums were much more versatile in terms of dynamics. The suspense curves worked way better, too. Again, 7empest is the exception, as with every gripe I have with this.
