Had a chance to see him last month. Didn't do it. Kind of regretting it.

While it's definitely not a 5, a came across with only a few albums with such emotional weight. Album's great.

Album's good. Not a classic. Blackstar was a justified 5 IMHO. I kinda regret springing for the vinyl of this though, since it's just too depressing to play all that often.

Most of this album, musically and lyrically, was written and some even recorded before the tragedy happened, so plenty of this is about other topics too. Also everyone should give it a try if they haven't yet.

Is it though? 5 out of 8 songs make reference to the tragedy (opener, girl in amber and the closing trio), and that event anchors the trajectory of the album. People are going into this as a Dead Relative album (ala C&L and A Crow), I don't even remember what else he sings about here.

I still need to see the movie, wonder if that sheds light on the writing process of this cause I'd be curious. A lot of the lyrics are pretty strange and could have multiple meanings imo

The strangeness of the lyrics is a big part of what holds this back for me.

I usually listen to this with some hesitation because it's just too heavy. Usually I have to be in a specific mood.

Also the term 'Blackstar Syndrome' is just stupid, Blackstar was a fantastic album before Bowie died and his death re-contextualised and elevated it

Yeah, I'm pretty sure 'Blackstar' was in the running for aoty before Bowie's death

Yeah the people who didn't like Blackstar decided to rewrite the narrative for it when it was actually getting stellar reviews and ratings even before Bowie died.
