I think it was mine too. One of my favourites on GR and I think it tends to be underrated by most people here, but I wouldn't consider it their best.

The Grand Conjuration drags so much it's ridiculous. Weakest song on GR for me. There's some moments on here I'd say are better than that song.

All opeth songs drag. And the grand conjuration is still the best.

lol

A lot of their songs drag no doubt but that one is one of the worst in that regard.

Fair criticism, but I feel the repetition enhances the ritual vibe intended for the track and it actually ends up more effective for me that way.

The shorter single-edit of The Grand Conjuration is a much more reasonable length (about 5 mins) and improves the song dramatically. I think that version was one of my first Opeth songs actually along with Ghost of Perdition. Even that version drags a little though and is still not close to one of their best for me.

If it drags then listen to the shortened 5 min music vid of it.

i hate that version. it's like they cut out all the best parts (although i haven't heard the song in years)

To be honest I haven't listened to either version in years either but I at least remember being able to sit through the shorter version, although it still had that plodding "is this still going" vibe.

It's been at least a decade since I've heard that version, still think the song slays either way. I could understand both sides for sure though.

Song is amazing, I can't really see why you would shorten it

Drags on for way too long. The single edit isn't perfect either though as it might trim off the fat but also some the juicy meety bits too

I played the shit out of that song back when I first heard it.

ChoccyPhilly must not have listened to much DOOM metal if he thinks that song drags on, blast some Esoteric and the grand conjuration is to the point in comparison

That song doesn't sound much like doom metal though so that's a weird comparison.

This version is half the length of the original and mainly just shortens the repetitive parts. It manages to keep the amazing solo and dissonant guitar section that follows. Generally, as far as song edits go, this is as good as they come.

Yeah that's the shortened version we've been discussing.
