it's not just longing for all the good things of your youth, it's also reminiscing that decadence you probably aren't so proud of

Really love Anna. I assume I'll feel the same way I do with all their records. Love Greg's songs, hate Tom's.

The whole tom vs greg thing must be so awkward for them. They have to be aware one is more liked than the other. gregs songs always get picked for the singles. Live you can definitely see the crowd has a more intense reaction to greg songs.

Agreed. I think about that all the time. I don't even think Tom's songs are particularly awful, they just don't connect with me in any way. But yeah, Casey, Mexican Guitars, Time Tables, these are all songs that people have deep, personal connections with. Tom seems like a really nice, happy-go-lucky guy but his lyrical content (and vocal delivery for that matter) just don't hit me.

I still like Tom's songs, but Greg's are still clearly better. And I love Greg's voice

I didnt like his voice when i first listened to this. In fact, now that i think about it, treb is the reason i got into the Menz. He told me to check them out, i did and i wasnt into it. Then at some point he brought it up again and i was like "i did check them and ehh." But then because of that encounter i went and gave them another chance, and now look at me. Just fucking look.

I might actually prefer Tom's singing to Greg's, but in terms of the songwriting and the lyrics... yeah, it's not close.

Scratch that, I'd say it IS quite close on this album, but on their latest two, the gap between their songwriting has got wider.

The whole tom vs greg thing must be so awkward for them.

They are clearly aware of it (the singles thing, and the obvious fact that Greg always has more songs on the albums than Tom). They'd be idiots if it never occurred to them. It's probably not that awkward, though. By the same logic, would Eric and Joe feel awkward about being in a band where they don't write at all? Tom (and Eric and Joe, for that matter) are probably perfectly accepting of their position in the band. Otherwise, Tom woulda pushed for more songs or started a side project already.

Anyway, Greg is obviously better overall but there's so many fucking great Tom songs that I would never talk him down. Obviously there's "Burn" and "Freedom Bridge" but imo all his songs on ATP are like in the top half of that album, and his songs on Exile are all solid too. I know I've drawn this analogy before but I feel similarly about Greg and Tom as I do about Matt and Dan from Alk3 - Matt's songs define that band and he usually has more on every album but Dan totally still holds his own.
