well lyrically the album was all about yearning for a life of luxury whilst living in poverty, and that track includes audio showing that the members of the band actually were affected by the darker aspects of impoverished life that their music was complaining about, so thematically the drug buy makes sense. It doesn't actually work at all with the music, but I get why they wanted it there.

Point taken Zar. I still think it's a rather clunky integration of the topic to the theme overall.

Kerry was into opiates at that point and George told him to get a recording of a drug deal, so he put his phone in his shirt pocket (supposedly) and recorded the deal. They mixed that with the street preacher sermon to sort of illustrate the idea of 'personal hells', I think.

Yeah I'd check them, Sunbather is an excellent album, this is too, and Bermuda is worth hearing.

Wow that was a really good read. I think that definitely makes that interlude a lot more powerful and I like the ideas at work, but even with that all said, it's inclusion still doesn't work for me

That's how I felt even with the explanation as well, Essence. It's just bit of a non-sequitur for me and the fact that it remains that way even with all of this added context just confirms my original suspicion.
