Cheese is relative I think. It really works for this kind of music, I can think of stuff that is a lot more cheesy than this. The sax in Another Day isn't that easy to swallow tho, but the melodies are damn strong on this. Guitars and synths go pretty hard either. As the vocals. Or the drums. Or the bass. Well. A strong 5 imo.

One year ago I thought this band was shitty, haha. And now I'm in love with their classic stuff. I also dig how their covers are made of stock footage. It just kinda works in a weird way.

Surrounded is probably my favorite DT song, they didn't resort to any carnival ass show-off section and guess what, it works. The climax at 3:45 is actually justified and I really dig it. Any other song (not ballads) like that one by them?
Another DT song I can really dig is Take the Time, LaBrie really shines in that section around 2:50. Very colourful and optimistic voice, shame it lasted for like 1 album.

There is nothing as uplifting as Surrounded tbh.
Learning to Live and Wait for sleep are just as essential imo
Is Finally Free a ballad? That one is kinda restrained and it works so well. A brilliant closing track.
Trial of Tears, too. That one is just good songwriting, no wankery.

Really glad you discovered DT for yourself kalk. So many great ones...
Btw Take the Time has one of the best synthesizer solos ever. Classy and powerful, Moore ftw.

I think Labrie's voice was at its best during Awake, his tone was much more raw and edgy. SFAM had ok vocals, and it went slowly downhill after that and we haven't reached the bottom yet I think.

" Any other song (not ballads) like that one by them? "
I'd recommend Octavarium (the song). It's 24 min and has quite some wankary in the middle, but it serves a purpose and the climax feels deserved and meaningful.

I should still dig Falling into Finity, I'd have to brush the dust from the rest though.
"I think Labrie's voice was at its best during Awake, his tone was much more raw and edgy."
I don't think his voice works with the raw style, it highlights his nasality and I can't bring myself to enjoy it much. Has to be said though that already in 1992 he paled compared to his own studio recordings from what I've seen in videos.

Labrie peaked here. He was still OK on Awake but the grittier sound didn't suit him as well.
