"...it's difficult to take the whole conceptual backdrop of the album seriously. On top of that shaky structure the technicality and showiness of the album's music starts to feel like a house of cards. "

I don't really think that the lyrical concept affects so badly the whole album.I agree that it is a little crappy but Mastodon never were great lyricists.

The ominous and brooding jam that opens "The Czar" is tedious and sloppy, delaying the onslaught of riffs that manage to defibrillate the song at around 5:08.

that's actually a good moment of the album.I can't see why it is tedious. The bass line and the guitar riffs are solid while the synth additions give it a mystical atmosphere

generally it's a well written review, but I don't aggree that the ineffective aesthetic, the bad lyrics, their incapability to escalate when needed and the unsuccessful genre crossing moments, can cost this such a low rating.

Scissor how many times have you listened to this? I had it at 4.5 in the beginning but it grew off me
very fast when I noticed that underneath the riffs (which are repeated way too much) there was little
substance. Oh and the lyrics are terrible.

I must have listened to the whole album over 30 times, and then I gave more attention to Oblivion or to Czar( just to hear the last solo!).

I see what you mean, Tyraelxy, and I kinda agree. There are so many over-repeated passages and riffs here that it turns out for some songs to be boring. I think this is the worst element of the album alongside with the lyrics(which I don't really bother). However, i find many moments here truly great, I like the production and i think It's kinda rare to find such a solid album staring so insistently to the past without making a fool of its' self( that's where I disagree with the review).

As for my rating, I would admit that I have a personal affinity for the album so I can be that objective!

This. Whenever I listen to the Last Baron I have the feeling thay they just played the song twice to make it longer.

Yeah, this is best seen in the Last Baron. It has great melodies and instrumentation, but they have stretched it so much....

This album is fantastic. The progressive element in the music is phenominal and the classic rock twist on an ugly, greasy metal bands sound just goes to show you how the band has grown as musicians. Great album. Last Baron is the shit and so is The Czar. Great band.

^Agreed. Although in relation to most other metal records put out in the last couple of years, it's pretty damn good.

THIS.

Otherwise, except the length of the last baron, which is the only song that actually makes you bore at one point,I think the rest of the songs are fantastic and the whole album is one of the best albums of the last decade at least.

You gave this a 5? Sorry but I cannot comprehend how you could 5 an album with so much obvious flaws.

First of all,I consider the czar as one of my favorite tracks of all time.Hind's solo at the 7th minute is arguably incredible.Same goes for the whole riffing of the track.

Also, oblivion is another really good track.(I think) it's the first song ever that Brann Dailor sings, which I think it was a pretty good idea, considering that,as it seems,he's really good at it.Needless to say that the drumming of the whole album is fantastic too.

Plus,I don't get the hate the lyrical concept of the album gets.I believe writing about Rasputin was another intelligent and pretty interesting idea of them,to make the tracks have a sequence and not every song being for random lyrical subject.

If it didn't drag on or the drummer wasn't silly then I would consider this as an ultimate metal album.
