There's definately a split reaction to the record, one that is appreciative of the cold minimalist efficiency and another one rather disregarding the drawn-out repetitive arrangements as well as the plain sound design and melodic content. Perhaps a good suggestion to Kraftwerk fans in particular.

Translation: I highly recommend Autechre to nerds who listen to cringe robot band from the 70s because I don't get them.

There are many here listening to both if you didn't notice. Not that I care if you love to insult people sharing a similar music taste.

I have a feeling this is definitely not a four, please confirm / deny with a persuasive argument. K thnx in advance I’m not actually listening to it because I don’t want to, which perhaps illustrates that it cannot be, as one should actually revisit 4s occasionally 🤔

It's a 5 because it's tagged as IDM which stands for Intelligent Dance Music so 5'ing this makes you appear intelligent so it's a 5

Been binging these guys recently. Undecided on a rating for this one yet but it'll likely be 3.5 or 4.

Surprised this is so low for you tbh Johnny

Also can we talk about how silly IDM is as a genre tag

this bored my pants off with the exception of a couple of songs, do not care for Autechre's engineering-music dated digishit one bit despite loving a lot of stuff not so far off. this leaves my imagination dry as a bone
and do you mean that it's a dumb name, or an arbitrary (coincidentally dumb) name applied to a load of things that don't belong together?

Both, it's incoherent as a concept and conceited all at once, maybe actually worst genre tag of all time?

you know most artists tagged as IDM agree with you right?

i feel that the concept of having a direct genre counterpart to EDM that emphasises listener stasis rather than musical complexity does hold water to a degree - switch the brand to something along the lines of Electronic Computer Music (jazz doesn't exist shuttup) and all already sits a good deal better for the existing canon
take it one step further and amputate anything adjacent to house/techno/downtempo with a little more severity (ambient techno and microhouse esp already accomodate this very nicely) and suddenly the air is that much clearer

It's the "intelligent" adjective, implying other dance music inherently isn't, that sticks in the craw.

@Hyperion I've heard a few artists who disagree with the label yeah, I'd assume anyone with a sense of awareness would feel weird about it.

It's scary to think there are people out there who don't have this rated as a 5. You can give 1-2 stars non-ironically to the rest of their discography and I'd not beef with you, but this, NAH, just... sit. That's about the nicest thing I can say if you politely disagree (except to Demon of the Fall, who's cool!).

This is not even in the same ballpark as the next best electronic albums. 76:14, Substrata, Anima and Quadrant Dub are all monstruous displays of artistry, but yeah, Tri Repetae is special and infinitely detailed in scope.

I believe you guys are overreacting, pretty much any genre name is incredibly stupid (Heavy, Death) Metal, Rock (n' Roll), Indie, Blues, etc. IDM is not a very relevant subgenre of electronic music anyway. It is what it is and it's obviously both sarcastic and truthful at the same time, if you hate the term IDM it is most likely because you cannot dance intelligently to music.

“ It's the "intelligent" adjective, implying other dance music inherently isn't, that sticks in the craw.”

I think you should look into how the term came to be. it was never meant to imply being “smarter” than regular club music. warp released their artificial intelligence compilations in the early 90’s and a mailing list was created for fans of the new style of “armchair electronica”. it was meant to be electronic music for home listening but, because of the moniker given to the “artificial intelligence” series of releases, the tag “intelligent dance music” started being applied to any artist making electronic not specifically designed for the dance floor.

pretty much every single one of them had active distain for the term, with guys like RDJ offering alternatives like “braindance” to get away from the stigma attached to the term. however, the memetics were too strong and IDM just kind of stuck, and now everyone just deals with it, even though it doesn’t really mean anything.

no one making IDM thinks they’re some sort of patrician ivory tower artist. most of them were just working class kids from Manchester and Sheffield with digital samplers and shitty Roland keyboards.

Wow that’s cool info Hype, about how the term came to be etc.

I’d heard that a lot of people associated with IDM dislike the term, I don’t think there’s much chin-stroking going on, except amongst a comparatively small section of ignorant fans (mostly kids who don’t know any better), I guess.
