It's obviously not bad by any means, but doesn't do justice to the music. It feels a little too linear and congested imo (the mix is at fault for that as well), In Absentia at least sounds rich and the instruments have more "room" to do their thang. Anyway the albums still gooo

Ghost of Perdition and Harlequin Forest would be top tier Opeth if they didn't run out of steam 2/3 through

Yeah Ghost of Perdition is because only after the solo it doesn't quite do it for me but Harlequin goes on a few minutes

too long for me

Last third of harlequin forest drags but the first bits is among their best. GOP is e best on the album and that solo is blissful

I just love that quiet part, then dissonant part, then solo in GOP so much that the last minute and a half is kind of underwhelming in comparison. Same with the first 8 minutes of Harlequin Forest, it just drags afterwards in unnecessary heavy imo

The ending of harlequin forest is really boring and overstays its welcome

Don't forget to mention the chuggy brutal bit before the beautiful mellow part in GOP too! Those 2 minutes are what Opeth

are all about. Brutal, beautiful and emotional.

Yeah everything up to after the solo in GOP and first 2/3 of Harlequin Forest is my favorite 'Peth since BWP, including all albums that came after too probably

Yeah, can't really argue with that. I just wish this had more moments that are of that calibre

Beneath the Mire and Baying of Hounds are probably just under top tier Opeth, and almost no slow/dragging parts

I recently only discovered by version of harlequin forest (11.39) doesn't contain reverie, which is like a whole minute of some decent guitar work. How did that pass me by?

Baying of hounds has some great dissonance and acoustic parts
