There might be a difference between say, me choosing not to listen to some scene castoff and you holding up a bunch of gimmicky trend-hopping whiteboys as guiding lights of several styles that they’re cribbing off the work of black artists actually pushing forward those different styles, light years ahead of this focus grouped cash grab

Even if they're not "guiding lights", they're definitely doing more in the realm of "popular" music to push a greater sense of dynamic than a lot of "true pop" and "true metal" artists usually do. The closest recent example I can give is Ed Sheeran doing that collaboration with Bring Me on a re-do of "Bad Habits", but even then that's just ONE song, not a whole album. That's the direction I'd love to see return in "mainstream" culture.
If we're going the race card here that's kind of been a thing for decades. Like this has been happening since Elvis and before. It's sadly inevitable that a genre will be "co-opted". At this point all I can hope for is a respectful homage.

Nah I’m talking about how you’re choosing to stay ignorant of the work of those artists, and how it’s a different consideration than me not listening to enough to bad music to see this for the 2.0 it *truly is*
Obviously there’s been cross pollination of influence, alongside outright theft of the music of black artists as long as popular music has been a concept. That’s not what I’m talking about, I’m talking about your batshit late game appeal to subjectivity, or whatever it is you’re trying to communicate

It reads as pretentious hipster nonsense to sit there and downplay certain artists' impact on someone and then just rattle off a list of comparative unknowns like they're going to listen.
That's not the way to recommend music. It's even worse than reddit users misleading me into trying an album when I'm in a certain mood only to find out that said album isn't even remotely relevant to that. It's like we get it you know a bunch of artists, show me something from them that would scratch a specific itch as well or better than the band you're dismissing.
Same energy as all the metalbros that for years dehumanized me for liking metalcore due to it having the highest concentration of relatable content of any metal genre, and tried to get me to dive into the brutal death hypetrain like it was going to do anything to change my mind. I'm cynical because there's specific things I need and a lot of heavy music just doesn't provide it and the fans seem to dismiss people for wanting it.

This is actually getting worse with each listen for me. Also the Sleep Token fanbase are almost as cursed as the DGD fanbase. Twitter is an absolute minefield, God help having an opinion on Sleep Token lol.

DGD's is worse because they're okay with Tilian getting a free pass back and their last 4 albums have pretty much all been the same formula - dumb Jon Mess lyrics, somehow even dumber Tilian lyrics, and the vocals clash hard with the music which gets more and more clinical with each new release.

"Same energy as all the metalbros that for years dehumanized me for liking metalcore..."
These scenarios are...not comparable? There's a difference between Sleep Token cribbing notes from other artists within the same genre they are aping from so maybe check them and meatheads recommending a completely different subgenre to metalcore with very different appeals and histories. There's a difference between wearing the veils of a genre and doing something different entirely.

Lmao nothing screams pretentious hipster more than a vocalist who deliberately chooses to mispronounce words while shoving all kinds of different genre tropes down a listener's throat which is why he constantly sounds like he's choking on a dick.
CHOKEHOAOUOLD
"Such art, very emotional and intentional. They didn't just do this bc Gen Z eats this up, it objectively resonates with the emotion of the song."

Brutal death metals boring, prog or melo deaths where its at. But listen to what you like my homies. Honestly i find post-metal to be the most emotionally expressive subgenre of metal. I can have pretentious wanky taste sometimes sooo feel free to ignore me. Anyone who dehumanizes someone over music is a fucking idiot

ADB you’re doing that thing again where you hyper focus on people’s ratings. The shit does not matter, everyone has different opinions of what ratings mean

'I prefer to go off of what's actually happened and is public not this pseudo intellectual speculation about "exploitative lyrics".'
this might be the funniest comment ive read in several years. just caught up on this thread. jesus christ. the lack of self awareness in the comment is brilliant

"dehumanized me for liking metalcore due to it having the highest concentration of relatable content of any metal genre,"
Ah, going to query this. Content is pretty broad across um...the entirety of music as a whole.

is the relatability of scene kid metalcore enhanced by all the grooming of teenage girls?
