The guitar tone is a little further back and tamer in the mid treble which I actually think was a genius move because it perfectly fits the slightly more relaxed style of this album. It does overall sound the same but the small changes do turn into a huge difference in how I feel listening to it.

I'm just gonna say it. This is Metallica's best album. It's the most inspired they've been since Black Album and has a perfect style-production combo.
It doesn't have their best songs (other than Chasing Light, which is top 10 Metallica), but it is easily their most well rounded and consistent album. They have never done six undeniable bangers in a row to start an album, let alone maintain for the rest of the album. Chasing Light is a brilliant mid album climax. It's just an insane album for how many great songs it has. Nothing is just "lol fast heavy thrash metal" like their last two albums. The writing is genuinely inspired and compelling throughout.
