I never thought I would be torn based on Rhymin and Stealin.
It's awesome in some ways and terrible in others.

Zep followed the old blues tradition of "borrowing" songs and ideas from other like-minded artists to a fault, hence why there's a wealth of songs from those first four albums where their origins lie elsewhere entirely. In the modern era where copyright was more enforced than, say, back in the late 30s/early 40s, Zep unsurprisingly got slapped with several accusations of plagiarism, which to a certain degree were well-founded. There's a reason why a solid amount of their songs are credited to other artists (Bring It On Home for example).

The Spirit case is a lot more difficult to determine because of what elements were lifted from the original song and also because of how late this accusations came forward. Had they said something when Stairway came out, they would have a lot more traction than they did when they eventually spoke up. Quite honestly, they screwed themselves by remaining silent for so long.

There was a trial not very long ago about the credit of this song. Does anyone know how it ended?

And Randy California also claims led zep played "fresh garbage" in their concerts.
So Zeppelin were REALLY into Spirit.

They're getting a new jury or something I think, but Spirit have lost every time so far so I can't imagine they'll have any more success this time around

Yeah, i read it a few minutes ago. As much as i love Spirit and their instrumental, i must say, this case is clouded to say the least. The intros may sound similar but the chord progression is not entirely the same, no matter what the untrained ears might tell you. Its just some of the key-notes that are the same. But in that era of music, a lot of artists were playing a similar ascending chord progression with descending key-notes; it wasn't an unheard of technique.

I'm not saying Page wasn't influenced by that progression to the degree of using it. But essentially i think we will never be quite sure whether he stole that intro and to what degree.

New article shows that Zep's people really fucked something up when looking up the copyrights iirc

Also of note : they never played the songs back to back during the initial trial, instead playing transcribed sheet music of specific parts.

This is a nice video analysis of the two songs. People can look it up and think what they will regarding this whole case.

When you check an album and realize that you've already heard every song on it at some point or another in your life. Same thing happened with Boston self-titled.
