If your heart was in it, I'd stay a minute
I'm dying to be taken apart

Well that's fuckin cool! Hadn't heard that yet, thanks. Funny too that Guilty Party ended up being one of the undeniables on here
Also that line from Born to Beg has become a top 10 National lyric for me, good choice

I really like Empire Line but the ending is such an unlistenable mess. When Bryan is doing the Bryan-y 16th note drumming with snares and Matt's singing the pre-chorus the whole thing is just overwhelming.

"Sounds like you're judging it for what it isn't rather than what it is which is unfair."
this is literally how all criticism of anything works

That's literally not true Rowan, you criticize something for what it is because you think that what it is doesn't work well. The base point of the criticism in that case would be that the electronic drums aren't well executed but instead of saying that he said it's bad that they used electronics instead of live drums, which isn't inherently in itself a bad thing.

You have to start by criticizing something for what it is before you can posit that something else would be better.

except criticism is based on you comparing it to something else which has done the thing better, we literally need a frame of reference by which to critique anything. so all criticism involves comparing the subject to something else which it is not

That sounds like a circular argument to me, you have to know something else that does something well or poorly before you can judge something else as being done well or poorly? Not all criticism has to be comparative, I can think something is bad without considering how it could be better.

I mean sure all good and bad is relative to some extent but you don't necessarily have to judge something as good or bad because it isn't bad or good, respectively.

This is getting strangely specific but for example I think dill has an awful flavor and I can think that without thinking of how it could be made to taste better.

Yeah lol that was the first thing that came to mind when I thought of things that I simply detest without having a reason.
And obviously food and music aren't the same but I think the general principle follows.
