I'm pretty sure Billboard doesn't even go by pure album sales for their album charts anymore. They take into account stuff like streaming of songs and YouTube plays as well, which causes a lot of alt/rock artists to suffer since they don't get the mass influx of streaming that benefits pop and rap.
It also helps that this week pretty much had no big drops. Next week they'd be competing against QOTSA, who had #1 with Like Clockwork so I don't think Brand New would have beat them. This week they're up against Dave East, A$AP Ferg and Grizzly Bear, not that intimidating
