Absolutely Erik, there are some killer recent metal acts out there that are way too overlooked. Spawn of Possession is a prime example of a band that doesn't get the love they deserve.

Spawn can be pretty kick ass so I'll second that. My ratings give away my obvs fav modern metal band, but minus that Diablo Swing Orchestra's Pandora's Pinata is what's interested me the most for a modern metal album.

Best modern metal is Obliteration, hands down.
