So what's the consensus on who is the better drummer?

mikey manginas got some chops, no one would dispute that, but portnoy is one of the best modern metal drummers in the business let's be real here

Miss Portnoy's lyrical themes and darker songwriting capabilities.

Portnoys lyrical themes in those later albums were the worst thing about the band besides the singing

Yeah, but he wrote The Best Of Times. It's still better than the shit Petrucci is writing these days *cough* Along For The Ride/The Bigger Picture *cough*

No idea why Myung isn't writing all of their lyrics.

Petrucci wrote the lyrics to a nightmare to remember and in the presence of enemies so of course even portnoy looks good when compared

Or the music either. I'm pretty sure he wrote Fatal Tragedy or maybe just the solo parts

I was going to say that In The Presence of Enemies is the worst epic they've written, but at least I can remember parts of that song. When I think of Illumination Theory literally nothing but a swell of cheesy orchestral excess comes to mind.

In the name of god isn't really an epic, it's shorter than nightmare to remember, is that an epic too? If we're counting name of god it's probably 3rd best

Yeah plus there's Trial of Tears, The Ministry of Lost Souls, etc. I think the minimum length is 18

minutes for what they consider an epic

In The Name of God is good throughout, has a better solo and no fake Portnoy growls. Definitely say

it's better than Ministries, which has that completely out of place solo. Great songs nonetheless

@ChoccyPhilly Ugh, I wouldn't like them becoming like PT. I want them to return to ''Awake'' era, when they had both musical substance and excellent, skillful solos.

Myung's lyrics are great but Kevin Moore's ones were outstanding. Space-Dye Vest is one of the greatest love songs ever and it's a DT song, that says something.

It's not really a DT song, the whole thing was written by Moore. DT later said they never would've included it in the album if they knew he was gonna leave
