They're very useful if you don't think of them as definitive or exhaustive methinks. Someone might describe Noctambulist as "technical disso-black/death" or some shit, of course it isn't a real genre, but I'm gonna go in with a pretty good idea of what to expect.

Yes that is true. Ive been seeing "cavernous" thrown around, and I quite like that one aswell.
Using fusions of 2 metal subgenres doesnt really get anywhere with alot of bands. Blackened-death metal is a nothingburger
