Bathory is the king of BM, Ulver is second just for this album alone

New to BM, are these really the best BM riffs out there?

Some of these songs rip but I feel like a lot of the guitar work is fast strumming chords, single notes, that all sound similar, and I can riff them out pretty easily.

With that said, the atmosphere of this album is awesome, I just don't see the riffs being the best part at all.

First wave BM riffs better if you ask me. Check out Celtic Frost's To Mega Therion and Morbid tales for example.

Paysage is where it's at, though you won't remember a single riff on any album.

If you want BM with riffs then Dissection is the best starting point

Sacramentum - Far Away From the Sun

Vinterland - Welcome to My Last Chapter

Mork Gryning - Tusen ar har Gatt (which probably means something melodramatic in Swedish).

Celestial Bloodshed - Cursed, Scarred and Forever Possessed (great vox too)

Never got into Windir for some reason. Something about them always irked me. Some great rec's there guys but as far as starting points go I stand by my Dissection m/

Actually Bathory is a good band for BM amateurs. Black metal riffs aren't meant to be technical like Death metal and thrash its all about atmosphere. Some of the addicting BM band are Dissection, Emperor, Darkthrone, Mayhem, Paysage. Of course if you like symphonic sound then we have Summoning and Graveworm.

Alright so far I checked out a couple songs from:

Dissection

Vinterland

Celtic Frost

Paysage d'Hiver

Dissection definitely has some riffs, and Paysage has a lot of atmosphere.

Just gonna keep listening and see what I like best, but yeah I'm a total amateur to BM.

Black metal is the most diverse metal subgenre with regards to intent and feel, I think. It's hard to find mellow death metal, uplifting doom, or catchy grindcore but black metal covers it all in its various incarnations.
