I only listened to that TDEP-sounding single they dropped last year.

Pushing The Tides? TDEP maybe a bit of a stretch, but it sure is a bit more chaotic than almost all modern Mastodong

It's the closest thing to them sounding like ferocious beasts again i guess

Seriously Brent especially sounds like a beast on here. He's kinda underutilised lately, the guy did one of the best rock/metal chrouses ever on Oblivion

I like how they aren't afraid of singing, still think Troy is the better singer, Brann's Ozzy-like voice can be very hit or miss, though.

Last year was a strong return to form for them.

Everything after Crack the Skye has still been good, just less ambitious and more accessible. Each album has a few heaters and you can definitely cobble together an album's worth of excellent stuff from them. They have aged remarkably well for a metal band unlike, say, Opeth

Troy is technically quite obvs the better singer and very versatile, but Brent has that special Southern flavo

Oblivion though god damn

Also the middle eastern guitar harmonies on Crusher are so sweet

Oblivion takes me back, wish I could've seen them back when they played CtS in its entirely in 2009 but couldn't get a ticket.

Very good, better than most of their records even, much more balanced and pristine. Vocals are actually really good these days too

Brann was clearly the MVP though, Drumming and singing at that level is insane

that riff during the verses of trampled under hoof makes you feel as though you are being trampled under hooves, and if being trampled under hooves was the feeling they were going for, then they succeeded at making me feel as though i'm being trampled under hooves during the verse of trampled under hoof

Notwithstanding the fact that one of them has “punch” in its title: what an opening one two punch

The group vocals on crusher destroyer remind me of a huge wave building force and then crashing against a rock or something which is funny cuz their next album was nautical n whatnot!

I guess that’s the effect of WHITE WHALE HOLY GRAIL rhythmically/timbrally too, they’re good at the whole tension-release thing playing out in miniature
