yeah i mean, i'm fine with shit being out of key and/or "wrong" i just don't find it to work very well here. especially compared to the agalloch that came after

I just love the rawness and beauty of this album. I think they go hand-in-hand perfectly here

// im not saying that the playing here is terrible or anything, and i dont know the album well enough to pull examples off the top of my head, but there are a few sections where the acoustic and electric guitars are slightly out of tune with each other, or the lead guitar hits a couple notes that dont sound right, and that kind of thing bugs me

in this aspect, they improved a lot on their subsequent albums

The three-parter that kicks this album off is amazing, especially the opener

i do love the production. the subtle orchestral touches and folky guitars during the black metal parts are sweet.

@Clim: If you don't like that tuning situation, you'd hate the clean guitar section from the second song off Dimmu Borgir's debut. It's fucking torture to anyone who is precise about being in tune

That acoustic part midway through As Embers Dress the Sky was the first time a song gave me goosebumps

Rock n' roll was never meant to be analyzed theoretically anyway. That's more for Bach, Beethoven, Mozart and stuff like that.

i'm not at all one of those nerds who values technical precision above everything else in music (black metal is one of my

favorite genres), but being out of tune is kind of inexcusable imo, only works in very rare scenarios

know whats one of my fav moments on this album, 3:30 into "she painted fire pt 3" when all the instruments cut out and

theres a little bass fill, and then a little percussion thing, and then that tremolo riff comes in. so cool

@danny: It can be analyzed theoretically if it's one of the more complex genres like progressive rock, since prog is

frequently known to have the long-winded compositions and virtuosity of classical and jazz music

all music is based in theory, its just that certain genres/styles place more emphasis on it than others

Perhaps Necro. However, I like to view rock liberally anyways, and submitting it to theoretical analysis is something that doesn't appeal to me; it feels like putting lions in cages, if you know what I mean.

I know exactly what you mean. I just view it all by circumstance. If it's straightforward hard rock or something, I don't really care about theory. Same if it's guilty-pleasure pop music. But if music is more complex then I'll both enjoy it and try to analyze it. Maybe it's just a habit for me :P
