the sheer presence of the hook on bright future (and this in general) is not what makes it not work. most of the core i like is significantly poppier than this, and i wouldnt pretend otherwise. its that the melodies themselves are pretty bland and generic. its just not something this particular band is all that good at so its all pretty faceless
i dont even think bright future is the biggest offender here tho. gatekeeper has one of the most annoying choruses ive heard all year in any genre. "iD rAtHeR bE tHe fUcKiNg MoNstEr" is definitely the worst 3 seconds here
