Dangerous standard to follow JWT, what is creativity and thought to one person may be complete babble to another.

I think if you watched some of the videologs and sessions FJM did for this record anyone can see some thought and heart went into this, it wasn't some maniacal drugged up hipster screaming toss me the mic and telling an orchestra to fuck off and just play. I can totally see and understand people hating this but saying it's poorly written/performed is just objectively bullshit.

I agree 110% so people can disagree with my logic I have no problem, after all tommy wiseau took the role as director and created the room.

Ha it's not a brick wall, just gonna disagree with objectively stupid statements like saying this isn't provocative.

That's fair dude, and I call it like I see it dude, and in my eyes you might as well be the wasted guy in the back off the general admission crowd on the floor booing the opening act off the stage, saying they blow and are terrible writers with very little context other than the 10 minutes you've listened to, and anyone who even bothers to give you a little more context you cover your ears because you can't be bothered.

Sure, you think this is written terribly, that's fine, all I'm saying is if you watched some of the vlogs released with this and some of the interviews he's done that FJM is pretty methodical with the way he made this record and while it's not your cup of tea that it's something that was methodically put together with some reasoning and not randomly spewed out.

It's like the difference between hating food because whoever cooked it is terrible or you just don't like how it is. Person A can make a pizza and just sloppily throw dough together, drench it with sauce and cheese throw it in the oven without checking the time and have it come out burnt and it would be terrible piece of cooking and food. Person B could follow a specific recipe where they knead the dough with butter so the flavoring is evened out, they can add flour on the outside and put garlic sauce around the edges to enhance flavor, they can make their own sauce from scratch adding pinches of garlic and basil and make their own custom 4 cheese blend and then throw the pizza in a custom wood stove and rotate the pizza every few minutes until its golden brown.... and guess what, that pizza can completely suck as well to you! But objectively you can argue person B at least has a methodology and logic behind their piece of shit pizza where as person A was not...

Whatever, I'm just going on now and I really don't care what anyone thinks about any piece of music, that's just an idea that's floated in my head for a while where i think on some level music can be objective in certain realms, such as writing and methodology. I'm sure I come accross as pretentious and narrowminded but I'm really not trying to be.

Sometime I really do just want to write a longer exposition on the objectivity of music and while at face value it's completely subjective, there are certain categories I think one could objectify and measure.

Sorry Boney, just venting my random but long thought out ideas on music subjectivity/objectivity. The food analogy is something I've thought about a lot, because food like music is completely subjective to the person and their tastes, but talk to any chef and they'll give you objective ways on how for instance steak should be cooked, and although you prefer it well-done that is objectively butchering the quality of the meat and how it objectively should be cooked a certain way, and any chef will attest to that.

And I'm not making the 1 to 1 comparison for cooking to music, I just think if one could agree something like cooking is completely subjective to the consumer of the food but can also have objective pretenses, that music could possibly be completely subjective at times but can have objective pillars as well.

There are certain aspects of music that are objective but those aspects have no bearing on whether the music is subjectively good/enjoyable.

Exactly, which is why when users earlier in the thread were saying this was terribly written I think someone could objectively show the methodology of how this record was crafted and objectively disagree. That argument has nothing to do with the opinion or rating of the record, purely the methodology behind, after all writing is in some sense measured in terms of purpose and conveying that thought.

Problem with this concept is not the concept itself, it's applying it to real people. They'll just use that reasoning as a scapegoat to put certain pieces of art on a pedestal just on the basis of them liking it so much whilst being accomplished in certain objective metrics. It's just much easier and less painful to go it's all subjective, plus that's far closer to the truth anyway. If people go into a conversation hating it and is intent in that, no amount of context is gonna change their mind.

Hell even with FJM is his lyrics he uses metaphors, couplets, alliteration, similes, irony, etc. Regardless of your thoughts on the content one can objectively look at a writer who uses these techniques and agree that generally people who apply such techniques are generally adequate writers

Long thread, lots a text. Imma just say I appreciate that you appreciate what's going on here. Objectivity and rating of a piece of music ends at it being objectively my opinion
