Luna was very good, and I liked the opening track. The rest of the album kinda blurred together for me and there was that weird solo on baby blue, so I kinda moved on. I have a nasty habit of rating things before letting them sink in all the way so my 2.5 may be entirely false

Gifts for the Earth is the what I would refer to as 'the bomb-diggity.'

This whole album is bomb-diggity. I think people got way too butt hurt over the fact that it wasn't another sunbather. I think it shines on it's own. Sunbather is still awesome in its own right; we can just listen to it when we're in that mood.

It's a lot darker than Sunbather and, in turn, better (for me).

Yeah I'm generally not a fan of "darker" as a sonic quality but they juxtapose it so well here with the melody and the lighter parts that it really doesn't even come off as dark to me. Just maybe more despairing, or angsty.

take baby blue:

starts with some 'ok' post rock then guitarist turns on his stomp box so the band can do one of those hxc high school battle of the bands band style "heavy chord on the upbeat out of nowhere dude fuck yeah" right into some uninteresting chord progression. then one of the most awful wah solos of the last 3 years comes in and then soon after they metalcore chug then the band plays that generic dissonant riff over another uninteresting chord progression then metalcore chugs again to end

but at least its not like brought to the water or luna which both end with 3 minutes of octave chords

Well if we're gonna get technical about it, Brought to the Water ends with a minute of piano, and has octave chords as a melody within the two minute section you're referring to beforehand.

Luna has instances of a similar working. What you're hearing is octave chords working as a melody (which then moves into tremolo picking, where the melody actually changes when George Clarke begins screaming), complimented with a guitar harmony (power chords), bass guitar covering the low-end of the spectrum, and drum fills galore.

You simplifying it to "end(ing) with 3 minutes of octave chords" is being pretty ignorant considering the fact that there's much more going on there compositionally. Deafheaven aren't musical geniuses but they know their way around a song; octave chords is a common (and completely respectable way in many cases) of conveying melody within a harmony when you want the power of more than simply picking one note.

Baby blue I'm not even going to get started with on you, given you've clearly made up your mind and couldn't give less of a shit to hear someone else's opinion because you take your own as fact.

structurally baby blue just feels super clunky and that solo really doesn't help.

Just jam the sangs and like/don't like 'em. The Deaf Heaven are a polarizing pink metal band, of course, but we shouldn't fight. We should hear the sangs. And sang the sangs.
