yeah if we are being honest here i wouldn't spend more than 5 dollars on seeing sufjan live and even so i wouldn't go out of my way for it
id pay 5 bucks to see him if one of my friends begged me to go see him with them and i happened to be free
if it was any more than 5 bucks id tell them to fuck themselves and id go spend my money on something more worthwhile like one beer

i'd go see just about anything for 5 dollars honestly

Wow what a great review, and such a sad story. I've not heard anything by this guy yet but it looks like I should maybe start with 'Illinois'. Not sure I want to start with something this heavy even though I do love this sort of thing.

Thanks for the compliment! And yeah, if I were you I'd start with Illinois if you like theatrical/epic stuff, Age of Adz if you're into electronic music, or Carrie and Lowell if you're mostly into folk. All his old albums are also great though (tl;dr: they're all a good place to start).

it's pretty nice, but the new tallest man on earth beats this for me

Just bumped this to the classic status it deserves. I love this as much or more than any of my other 5's.
New Tallest Man is excellent, but not even his best. Top 10 on the year, but towards the lower end of it (which is still outstanding).

there's just something about the tallest man on earth that hits me so hard every time. This, The Wild Hunt, and there's no leaving now have been in constant rotation on my record player...now i just need to acquire shallow grave on Vinyl!
thought about picking this album up too.. folk music is just the best on Vinyl. Favorite tracks are prolly No shade in the shadow of the cross, and Johh my beloved

Yeah I love The Tallest Man on Earth, so my opinion is in no way a diss. I hold both of these guys in such ridiculously high regard, but I slightly prefer Sufjan's voice and production methods. But it's like comparing masters of art, who's better is anyone's guess.

to be fair i should prolly listen to some more sufjan, i've only heard this one, and a couple songs off illinois

Damn on that 5, Sowing. This has grown on me a lot since my first listens. I am interested to see if this will continue to be as revered as it has been so far or if it will diminish in time.

This is his best work. People will tell you otherwise but they're wrong.

I'm only now just getting into him, but I like what I've heard (this and Illinois) so far.

@theBoneyKing: I did the same thing as you...I wanted to 5 this immediately, but after a few ill decisions in previous years (5's that dropped as low as a 4) I decided to always allow a 3 month buffer just to be sure, so I started it at a 4.5. This passed that test with flying colors, easily up there with TDAG, The Seer, Brother Sister, Grandfather, Simple Math, etc...(whatever my other 5's are).

Music is indeed a fickle thing... I can't say how many times I listen to a new record, listen to it over and over again, then leave it for months, relisten and not understand why I loved it so much at first. On, the other hand, some albums I just do not get at first, and then they become my favorites. Rarely does stuff go from great to bad, or bad to great, but it can fluctuate in levels of greatness.

^exactly why i get my ratings wiped from time to time
