One does not simply go into Maiden expecting there wouldn't be at least some pepper jack thrown in

As far as I'm concerned the competition is not that close, save for maybe Prowler and Wicker Man

It took me an incredible amount of time to get into Maiden... it never helped that the majority of songs they released as singles (as in first exposures) were the tracks I considered their crappiest. Here's a good case in point: 'Can I Play with Madness' is wank compared to everything else here... an absolutely awesome album.
Edit: coincidentally, just saw Ryus hating on the same song at the same time a continent away. Internet magic.

I was the same mate, far too ott for me growing up but as I got into my twenties I borrowed Number of the Beast off me best mate and ‘got it’ then YouTube happened I saw that Live in Rio Run to the Hills and really ‘got it’
Haven’t looked back.
Amazing band.

Yeah Can I play with... is just extremely cynical radio hit song. Sole reason too many are suspicious about maiden. Everything else is so damn good so why should we all go through it for the sake of the radio listeners. Would have been extremely ballsy to release it as a single but only as a extra track in lp xd. Everything else just flows so nicely. Pure high quality middle age blue cheese heavy metal madness.

I guess that is the hint some of us(like me)needed to realize that song is a completely parody of the band itself. And of course the lead single because Maiden in the 80s did what ever they wanted.

Sort of like doing an intended parody of themselves before they actually did become a parody of themselves.

Can I Play with Madness was the song that completely turned me off this album for years. Thankfully I eventually let the rest of the record sink in, and now it's one of my faves

Band so inventive they were a step ahead of the whole genre, and even themselves in the same time.
