This used to be a 5 for me before I realized it was horrifying rather than interesting.

Funny thing is, Clear Spot is actually a really good album

Probably because it's one of the most famous avant-garde albums ever, so people who had no chance of liking it still give it a shot because they see it on "this album is important" lists a lot

Well it probably doesn’t have nearly as many ratings as this at the very least.

I remember when I first heard Trout Mask Replica.

I was about 15-16, and back then I used to rent CDs from the library and they had Trout Mask. I was already an avid Zappa fan and knew about Beefheart from "Willie the Pimp" and "Muffin Man," so I gave it a shot.

I giggled and was shocked all the way through, but it was a good time regardless.

sure, ppl on this site seem to respond to it worse (on average) than to some of the most famous avant/free jazz though

you're definitely not wrong tho

so i have to listen to this sloppy mess that sounds like a bar band's drunken jam session four times to have an understanding of music?

that's literally what the guy in the video said. "You have to listen 4 times to have an understanding of music." calling people's musical education "woefully incomplete" implies that.
